Twórczość Mirosława Bałki znana jest niemal wszystkim historykom, kuratorom, krytykom i kolekcjonerom sztuki współczesnej, znana jest jednak głównie we fragmentach.
Wystawa Fragment w Centrum Sztuki Współczesnej Zamek Ujazdowski w Warszawie jest pierwszą w Polsce i na świecie wszechstronną prezentacją o charakterze retrospektywnym poświęconą pracom wideo Mirosława Bałki.
W twórczości Bałki wideo odgrywa wyjątkową rolę. Dzięki niemu artysta wprowadził do swojej rzeźby zarówno nowe formy artystyczne, jak i obrazy i tematy, które stanowiły nieoczekiwane przedłużenie jego dotychczasowej twórczości, i które pozwoliły mu w fascynujący sposób wykroczyć poza nią i spojrzeć na nią z nowego punktu widzenia.
Na wystawie Fragment przedstawione są prace wideo z ostatnich dwunastu lat twórczości Bałki: od najstarszych, z 1998 roku, kiedy to powstało pierwsze z nich, po najnowsze, z 2010 roku, prezentowane po raz pierwszy.
Wystawa przedstawia prace, które są najbardziej znane i przeszły już do klasyki sztuki współczesnej, w tym m.in. Winterreise z 2003 roku, na którą składają się filmy Bambi i Pond, Carrousel z 2004 roku (zakupiona w 2010 roku do kolekcji Tate Modern) oraz BlueGasEyes z 2004 roku. Przedstawione są również prace mniej znane i zupełnie nowe, a wśród nich m.in. Bottom z 1999/2003 roku, Narayama z 2002 roku, Michelangelo Buonarotti Reading (2004), Flagellare A,B,C z 2009 roku oraz Apple T. z 2009/2010 roku.
Niektóre prace z wystawy Fragment prezentowane były wcześniej na wystawach w Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen K-21 w Dusseldorfie (2006), WRO Art Centre we Wrocławiu (2008), University of Massachusetts w Amherst (2009) oraz Modern Art Oxford w Oxfordzie (2009). Wystawa Fragment prezentowana będzie w Akademie der Kunste w Berlinie w okresie od października do grudnia 2011 roku.
Równolegle do prezentacji wystawy Fragment w CSW odbywa się wystawa Ctrl Mirosława Bałki przygotowana przez Museo Reina Sofia i eksponowana jednocześnie w dwóch miejscach: w Museo Reina Sofia w Madrycie oraz w Opactwie Benedyktynów w Santo Domingo de Silos (2010-2011) w prowincji Burgos w północnej Hiszpanii.
Mirosław Bałka: Rzeźbiarski Klub Filmowy
Na program przeglądu złożą się filmy wybrane przez samego artystę, które on sam uznaje za inspirujące i ważne jako punkty odniesienia dla jego twórczości. W kolejne poniedziałki stycznia w KINO.LAB pokażemy filmy: „Idź i patrz” Elema Klimova, „Harmonie Werkmeistera” Bèli Tarra i „W roku trzynastu pełni” Reinera Wernera Fassbindera.
W lutym natomiast, także w poniedziałki: „Ptaki i ptaszyska” i „Króla Edypa” Piera Paolo Pasoliniego, „Stroszka” Wernera Herzoga, „Potępienie” Bèli Tarra oraz "Wniebowstąpienie” Łarisy Szepitko.
Mirosław Bałka needs little introduction to Irish audiences, as he exhibited at this gallery in 2003 and at IMMA in 2007. (He has also shown widely all around the world, perhaps most notably in 2009 at the Turbine Hall in London's Tate Modern). His work, usually made with industrial materials and such elemental things as ash, soap, and salt, deals poetically with issues related to history and memory.
In this exhibition, Bałka will show a video entitled apple T.

S.I. Witkiewicz, born in Warsaw in 1885, died in 1939 on the day that Poland was invaded by Russia. His father was also an artist. 'Witkacy', as he became known, is mainly remembered in his homeland as a painter, novelist, and playwright; his photographs are only one aspect of his art. Witkiewicz was an intense and troubled man who believed that Western culture was decadent, degenerate, and undermined by the collapse of ethical and philosophical certainties; trapped between a decaying past and an uncertain future, he used photography, perhaps more than other art forms, as a way to explore his existential anxiety.
In Witkacy's view, the individual is essentially alone, confronted by the impersonal indifference of others. He deeply disliked those aspects of life that he regarded as collective and trivial, predicting in his writings on the theory of contemporary culture that they would destroy everything of real value in the world. His portraits, which make up the majority of the photographic work, attempt to explain, or at least come to terms with, the enigmas of personal existence and the threat of its effacement. His personal despairing pessimism - not unlike that of Antonin Artaud - is the source of the dominant tone of the photographs, which is an almost unbearable tension between closeness and distance. There is madness and violence in many of his images, which may not be entirely unrelated to his occasional use of hallucinogenic drugs, but they also contain a lighter sense of absurdity and buffoonery.
This exhibition focuses on landscapes and the artist's self-portraits.
Invited to choose a selection of S.I. Witkiewicz's photographs for this exhibition and to accompany them with a work of his own, Mirosław Bałka has done so with characteristic enthusiasm and perspicacity. The Douglas Hyde Gallery thanks him warmly for his commitment to the project. We also wish to express our gratitude to Stefan Okołowicz and Ewa Franczak, from whom we have borrowed the original prints in this exhibition. It is largely because of their dedication that Witkacy's photographs have become more widely known in recent times, and for this, as well as their generosity in making them available to us, the Gallery is most thankful.
